Today’s post will explore additional Memorial pages found at Find-A-Grave which relate to the Kanistanaux family.

DOCUMENT

I found no additional headstones, but Find-A-Grave memorial page details for some family members suggest some places to look for documentation.

DISCUSSION

I found the following Find-A-Grave memorial pages to have information which may help me locate actual documentation.

  • Marleah (Moulton) Kanistanaux (Memorial #42293999) – died 17-July-1906, said to be buried next to Eli & Kate with no headstone.
  • Isaac Henry Kindness/Kanistanaux (Memorial #52408049) – died 24-Apr-1920 in NY, buried Webster St. Cemetery, Pomfret, Chautauqua Co., NY, no headstone photo.
  • William Kanistanaux (Memorial #11473849) – born 4-Jul-1874, died 13-Aug-1950, married Maude Haight, married Plooma Abbe Pearson, moved to Utah, buried Maeser Fairview Cemetery, Vernal, Uintah Co, Utah, no headstone photo.

Each memorial provides a date of death, but offers no source for the dates. Since the dates are specific (not just a year), I can assume there is a source record somewhere. I can use the dates of death to help locate death or burial records and obituaries which should in turn verify the accuracy of the death dates posted on the memorial pages.

Marleah’s and Henry’s memorial pages provide some additional treasures.

Much of the material on Marleah’s page is unsourced hearsay or unsourced possibilities that need more research before they are accepted as fact. However, one item is sourced as “History of Stockton NY thru the rear view mirror”. I will make an effort to learn more about this source since it appears to be a very nice little treasure.

Henry’s page is titled “Isaac Henry Kindness Kanistanaux”. I am pretty sure this is the 16 year old boy, Henry, from the 1875 NY State Census. Are you wondering where the name Kindness comes from? More on that in a later post.

What appears to be a death notice is transcribed on the memorial page, but there is no date or newspaper attributed. It has some notes in parenthesis which I doubt appeared in the original death notice so I will leave those out. I will also try to locate an original.

The death of I. Henry Kanistanaux, an Indian, occurred at his home on Howard St Fredonia, Wednesday Morning after a long illness,
He was 62 yrs old and had lived in the area for several yrs. He is survived by his wife Isabelle He leaves a sister Dr Lee Onetto of Allegany, burial in Webster St Cemetery

Nice! I now have another name, Dr. Lee Onetto (a woman) to add to the family and some additional locations to search. Since she survived his death in 1920, I should be able to find her in the 1920 Census at Allegany, NY.

See the Kanistanaux Home Page for more.
