Today I have a very exciting news clipping to share with to my readers. I have finally located some Kanistanaux family members prior to the 1870 Census.
This just goes to show that patience, persistence, and constantly revisiting sites I have already searched eventually pays off. It only took me 2 years and a new newspaper search engine to find this!

The Historical Newell Family
Today I will take a break from my Kanistanaux project to post this brief case study of the Newell Family. I recently received inquires from two different directions about the family and a new item to work with. I thought this would be a good time to take a fresh look at the family.

This occupation is typically thought of as “Indian work” in the Northeast, and the majority of basket makers were Native Americans. But there were also “Yankee” basket makers. Having an occupation of “basket maker” in New England does not guarantee the person was Native.
