I have confirmed that U-ta-wa-un is not the same person as Layton Kanistanaux, but what about Marleah, who was traveling with U-ta-wa-un in 1870? Is she Marleah Kanistanaux?
The jury is still out on this question. Today I will outline what I have discovered to date and how I interpret the material. I encourage my readers to comment.
Here is a census record I missed the first time I searched. This is the older of the two Dr. Lee-O-Netto ladies. It is always worth taking the time to recheck sources and experiment with search engines.
While rooting around trying to find more on the Dr. Lee-O-Netto ladies, I came upon this wonderful little treasure.
When Isaac Kanistanaux died in 1920, his death notice suggested he was survived by a sister “Dr. Lee Onetto of Allegany”. It took a bit of creative searching but I eventually found her.
Well, I guess I am not finished with the census just yet. I found Isaac once again in Pomfret and I finally discovered census records for a Dr. Lee-o-Netto which I will present in the next couple of posts.
Today’s post is an introduction to my current research project. I am attempting to determine if two women, Marleah Kanistanaux (wife of Thomas Layton Kindness/Kanistanaux) & Dr. Lee-O-Netto (several spellings), known in the Stockton area of New York State could be the granddaughters of an Abenaki man known as Metallic (many different spellings!) who inhabited the Rangeley/Umbagog region of Maine and the Coos Region of New Hampshire in the late 18th and early 19th Century. The connection appears to be through Eli & Kate Moulton of Sherbrooke, Quebec. There may also be a connection with the surnames Neff and Yokum in Welland Co., Ontario. My mission is to document, if possible, the apparent connection of the two suspected granddaughters to Metallic and determine how various other individuals fit into this genealogical jigsaw puzzle.
