Who Is “U-Ta-Wa-Un”?
I spent a day searching on the name “U-ta-wa-un” to see what I could turn up. I Googled him and I tried a number of newspaper search engines. I found a surprising amount of information about him. But is he the same person as Layton Kanistanaux?
Is This Marleah in 1870?
I have been searching for Layton & Marleah in census records prior to the 1875 NY State Census. I had no luck searching on the family name Kanistanaux. I decided to try just “Marleah” in an 1870 census search. I was surprised and very pleased to find a possible candidate.

1920 Allegany NY Census
When Isaac Kanistanaux died in 1920, his death notice suggested he was survived by a sister “Dr. Lee Onetto of Allegany”. It took a bit of creative searching but I eventually found her.
